Congratulations to Merrill Cheyne, Harris County Carver Middle School drama teacher and Georgia Thespian Chapter Board member on being selected as the Harris County Teacher of the Year!
Attention All Theater Members! Do you have a story about theater that changed your life for the better?
This year, the International Thespian Society will be hosting their annual festival in Lincoln, Nebraska. This year’s theme is titled “The Experience of Life/Life of Experiences” so we want to know what life experiences theater has given you. You can choose to write a short essay, a poem, draw a picture, ANYTHING! Once submitted by December 25, 2008, your pieces will be sent off to be posted around the setting of the International Thespian Festival for all of the attendees to see (hopefully YOU will be one of them ;D). If you’re interested and have any other questions, feel free to contact me, SSO Aimee , via email at asgatl@gmail.com. I look forward to reading all of your fantastic entries!
The Georgia Thespian Freestyle Theatre Festival application deadline has been extended until January 15, 2009.. If you have a performance piece that runs between 10 and 20 minutes and requires little (if any) technical support, then consider submitting it for our first ever Freestyle Festival. This is the perfect showcase for student written works, scene studies, short plays, improv troupes, mime performances, musical theatre dance numbers, puppet shows, and almost anything else that would work well in an intimate setting. We especially hope to showcase student created works. The application and more complete information is posted on the Shows and Screening page of the Conference pull-down menu. Contact Bob Ramseur, Bill Murray, or Betty Walpert for more information.
There are two important writing opportunities for EdTA student members that have February 2 submission deadlines: the annual Thespian Playworks playwriting program and script development workshop that culminates at the Thespian Festival, and our new essay contest in support of Arts Advocacy Day training and lobbying activities in Washington D.C. To find out more about Playworks go www.edta.org/playworks; for the essay contest visit www.edta.org/essayguidelines.
Are you a teacher or director thinking about organizing a troupe? Are you a new director organizing a troupe? Are you a troupe director who didn’t get a troupe registered for conference this year? You can still attend the 2009 Georgia Thespian Conference and be a part of the excitement! Email the webmaster at webmaster@gathespians.org with your name, your school name, and your t-shirt size. (All troupe directors attend free of charge.)
The OPENING NUMBER is looking for a TD. If you are a high school drama or tech teacher and are interested in this position, please contact Brian Barnett at brian.barnett@hcbe.net. This is not a big time commitment but does require someone who is organized and motivated. The tech kids are great to work with. TD must attend planning sessions and Opening Number rehearsals to meet with the techies.
